Gavin is Executive Director of the St Giles Centre for Religious Education and Faith Development.
In addition, Gavin is the Chief Moderator for Key Stage 3 Religious Education, as part of the securing teacher assessment initiative managed for the Department for Children Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) by the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC).
He also currently acts as Lead Mentor in Wales for the REsilience (AtGyfnerthu) project – a Home Office initiative, funded jointly by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and DCELLS, and managed by the Religious Education Council for England and Wales. This initiative is designed to assist teachers of RE increase their confidence in dealing with controversial and sensitive issues. Gavin also serves as a Board member of the RE Council of England and Wales
Prior to these appointments, Gavin was Inspector/Adviser for Religious Education for Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire Local Authorities, and also acted as Officer to each of the Standing Advisory Councils for Religious Education (SACRE) for those authorities. Until 2006 Gavin also served as Inspector/Adviser for RE and Officer to SACRE for Wrexham Local Authority while it was part of the shared advisory service between the four local authorities, and was the originator of the successful Tapestry of Life and Faith Festival now held in Wrexham bi-annually.
In addition to his roles within the local authorities, Gavin has also served for many years as Chief Examiner for GCSE Religious Studies (WJEC – Specification B), and has co-authored the text books, teachers guide and pupil revision guides for the course published by Hodder and Stoughton.
For many years he also chaired the National Advisory Panel for RE in Wales, and has also served as Secretary, Vice Chair and Chair of the Wales Association of SACREs – and continues as a member of the Executive Committee. For many years he also represented Wales on the Professional Council for RE (PCFRE), now known as National Association of Teachers of RE (NATRE), as well as serving on the Executive Committee of the Religious Education Movement for Wales (REMW).
