His quantitative interests include the place of cathedrals in Welsh society, especially in relation to social capital and the role of tourism, and the spiritual beliefs of young people in Wales. Emyr is also involved in qualitative research that explores the mid-twentieth century Welsh religious communities in the formation of symbolic capital and the pushing of gender boundaries.
Currently, he is working on a research project entitled: Religion as a social force in Europe. This research project is funded by the Eurosource programme, hosted by Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, in partnership with the University of Warwick and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. The project seeks to explore the role of religion as a force for solidarity in Europe. The Warwick-based research project will examine the role of religion and solidarity among friends and family using both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
